Compuware zAdviser: Everything to Gain, Nothing to Lose
In a new report, Bloor Analyst Daniel Howard says “There are three primary reasons to be interested in zAdviser,” Compuware’s service that uses machine learning to find correlations between developer behaviors and key performance indicators (KPIs) based on DevOps data and Compuware product usage data:
- zAdviser shows you how well your organization is doing “via KPIs, monitoring usage data, and obtaining specific advice from Compuware about how best to use its products.”
- zAdviser is an evolving service that “promises to be a truly exceptional product in the future, as more features roll out and more data rolls in.”
- zAdviser is free to Compuware’s maintenance-current customers, which means “you have everything to gain and nothing to lose.”
“Therefore, if you are in a position to take advantage of this service, we unequivocally recommend that you do so,” Howard says.
With zAdviser, Compuware customers now have the key to continuous improvement, which is essential to overcoming some of your biggest challenges. Mainframe-powered organizations face several, as Howard points out in his report. These include the rapid attrition of experienced programmers leaving a massive, hard-to-fill skills gap as organizations struggle to hire next-gen programmers who generally aren’t familiar with the mainframe; organizations’ poor visibility into mainframe activity; and difficulty adopting Agile and DevOps or ensuring the sustainability of these necessary processes.
“While there certainly are products to solve the problems highlighted above … How do you know whether you’re succeeding, and to what degree?” Howard says.
His answer, and ours evidently, is to implement a program of KPIs that “act as metrics that measure your success in a variety of areas” and allows you to continuously improve. Based on researched we commissioned with Forrester Consulting, we’ve determined quality, velocity and efficiency are critical to your continuous improvement success. Employee engagement is a fourth category you should consider, as it does impact the other three.
Herein lies the importance of zAdviser: It gives you access to these KPIs through a web-based dashboard built upon Elastic’s Elastic Cloud service and its Kibana data visualization technology, essentially empowering you to harvest your complex data and make it comprehensible so you can start forming intelligent, fact-based decisions that drive continuous improvement.
To learn more about the kinds of metrics you should be measuring, we recommend you read our new eBook, “Metrics Worth Measuring: Charting Your Mainframe DevOps KPIs,” which is also the third eBook in our “Achieving DevOps Guidebook Series” that leads you through an Agile/DevOps journey towards continuous improvement.
“As an offering, [zAdviser] is still very much in its infancy, and we expect it to improve in leaps and bounds as it matures,” Howard says, pointing out two reasons for this:
- Compuware’s commitment to making iterative improvements to products “at a very impressive—and consistent—rate”
- The evolution of zAdviser’s machine learning capabilities as it gathers more data from more customers
What does all of this mean?
“You have everything to gain and nothing to lose,” Howard says. “Therefore, if you are in a position to take advantage of this service, we unequivocally recommend that you do so.”
