CEO Chris O’Malley Discusses BMC’s Acquisition of Compuware
Overview: In a recent episode of the Modern Mainframe podcast, Compuware CEO Chris O’Malley talks about BMC’s acquisition of Compuware and how the companies’ shared corporate ideals and combined product portfolio will help mainstream the mainframe.
On June 1, 2020 BMC’s acquisition of Compuware was finalized. Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down with Compuware CEO Chris O’Malley for an episode of the Modern Mainframe podcast. Chris talks about the need for continued mainframe modernization, how the combination of Compuware and BMC will benefit customers, and how the companies’ shared customer obsession and complementary product offerings create a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts.
The Right Time
Surveys show that CIOs understand the power and continued relevance of the mainframe, as well as the need to remove silos and bring mainframe culture in line with the rest of IT. Compuware has led by example on one key aspect of this modernization, the adoption of Agile and DevOps.
“We’re showing that you can do anything on the mainframe that you can do on any other platform. And that’s wonderful, but what’s even more wonderful is the fact that we are now seeing customers all over the world achieving things that people five and half years ago would have thought impossible.”
But as more and more organizations undertake this modernization, there is an increased need for a vendor with large enough scale and a broad enough portfolio to provide tooling and support throughout the DevOps toolchain. According to Chris, the combination of BMC and Compuware fills this need. “So, it’s exciting,” he says, “it’s the right thing at the right time.”
The two companies share a passion: customer obsession. This, according to Chris, will allow the newly joined companies to understand the needs of its customers and work with them to innovate and create solutions that will help them increase the velocity, quality and efficiency of their software delivery.
Add in the market-leading technology offered by the companies’ complementary portfolios, and you’ve got a mainframe software company that provides incredible value to customers. As Chris says,
So, when you look now at Compuware and BMC, it’s almost like we’ve reached a point where certainly 1 plus 1 equals 3, and that we’re better together than we would be apart in meeting the demands of customers.
Chris goes on to discuss BMC’s vision of the Autonomous Digital Enterprise, how BMC’s Automated Mainframe Intelligence (AMI) and Compuware zAdviser can help make each other better, and the importance of cherishing developers and making them as productive and successful as possible.
The future is a bright one as BMC looks to incorporate Compuware and its tools to create best mainframe solutions possible. As Chris says, “it’s the most exciting time to be on the mainframe that there’s probably ever been.”
