Improve Application Performance Management to Reduce Costs and Increase Customer Satisfaction

Increasingly, mainframe applications provide essential back-end systems-of-record support for customer-facing systems of engagement. Compuware’s Application Performance Management solution combines the strengths of Strobe, Abend-AID and ThruPut Manager. These can be leveraged to identify inefficiencies as well as reduce hardware and software costs while increasing customer satisfaction.

Strobe enables developers with little mainframe experience to manage application performance and pinpoint performance issues without accessing the “green screen,” while Abend-AID contributes to the collection of information on problems occurring. Additionally, ThruPut Manager enables the automatic and intelligent optimization of batch jobs.

Reduce Monthly Licensing Charges (MLC) Costs

ThruPut Manager helps reduce rising MLC costs caused by the rolling 4-hour average (R4HA) of MSU. By constraining less important batch workload as the peak R4HA approaches, ThruPut Manager allows the most important workload to process while still meeting SLAs for all applications, both online and batch.

Additionally, Strobe identifies all the jobs running during the R4HA peaks, regardless of LPAR. The data is also collected in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) instead of current local time, enabling more accurate usage measurements and thus more intelligent tuning. In addition to constraining workload at your R4HA peak, well-tuned applications allow more workload to be processed at less cost.


Reduce CPU Usage

Whether batch jobs are running during the peak R4HA or not, you want them to perform well. When jobs run over, code quality isn’t at the level it should be. In that case, Strobe’s Batch Global Monitoring kicks off a Strobe measurement of the job so you can see what’s going on and correct it.


Identify Strategic Tuning Targets

Using Strobe’s Global Monitoring SMF collection, you can identify and initiate measurements on the jobs using the most CPU, running the longest and performing the highest I/O. Strobe will then provide “insight” reports of data collected from these profiles and present the most important tuning targets available in categories like COBOL, Db2, Language Environment and file access. These reports also let you see which CICS transactions, SQL statements and modules are using the most CPU.


Reduce Faults and Abends

Faults and abends cost time, money and potentially customer loyalty. You need to be able to quickly spot and address the faults that consistently cause online and batch applications to abend. Abend-AID automatically collects information on faults occurring on mainframe systems, allowing problem areas and trends to be quickly and efficiently identified.


Abend-AID also collects information on problems occurring and, through Syncsort Ironstream®, automatically forwards the data gathered to Splunk® to be viewed in a unique, intuitive dashboard.
