Compuware Survey Finds Over Half of IT Organizations Do Not Monitor MIPS Growth, a Major Factor in Soaring IT Costs
Compuware and Computerworld Team up to Analyze One of the Most Costly and Important Challenges Facing Mainframe Organizations: MIPS ConsumptionDETROIT--November 13, 2007--Compuware Corporation (NASDAQ: CPWR) today released the results of a survey designed to help organizations better understand MIPS usage and MIPS management in mainframe organizations. Commissioned by Compuware and fielded by Computerworld, the survey reveals valuable details for IT leaders seeking information on how their peers address one of the key IT costs: increased MIPS consumption. Among the more surprising results, the survey found that--despite the rising costs associated with MIPS creep--a majority of IT executives responding (58 percent) do not continually monitor MIPS usage. The survey also revealed that many IT leaders (43 percent) believe their organizations ineffectively manage MIPS. “As MIPS usage increases faster than business growth and other IT costs, it is consuming a larger portion of the IT budget and forcing reductions in other, potentially more strategic areas. Application failures, poor application performance and increased MIPS usage due to new system software releases and software packages have a growing impact on IT costs,” said Bruce Klenk, Director of Product Management, Compuware Service Management Products. “For businesses to improve application performance and reduce IT costs, it is imperative to control MIPS growth by implementing solutions that effectively monitor and manage MIPS usage.” The survey showed a remarkable growth in MIPS consumption of more than 10 percent, on average, annually. This figure was greater than overall business growth (nine percent) and IT cost growth (seven percent). The survey also brought to light a number of factors driving increased MIPS consumption, with business growth, poor application performance and recurring application failure topping the list. While business growth is obviously beneficial, unwanted and costly increases in MIPS consumption associated with recurring application failures and poor performance can be monitored and controlled. Eighty-four percent of respondents say improving the quality of applications in terms of response time and availability is important and 69 percent say that delaying or reducing CPU upgrades is important. Despite these imperatives, 43 percent admit they are not effective in managing MIPS today. Compuware’s MIPS Management Solution helps address this important issue by focusing on MIPS usage as the root cause of many hardware and software costs. By incorporating best-of-breed technology, expertise and proven best practices, Compuware’s MIPS Management Solution delivers the capabilities needed to identify and reduce application performance problems and faults that waste valuable MIPS. Commissioned by Compuware and fielded and tabulated by Computerworld Research, the MIPS survey was conducted in May and June 2007. Computerworld customers were invited to participate in the research via targeted broadcasts. Computerworld qualified all 100 IT respondents through a series of screening questions, verifying that they carry a title of IS/IT/technology director level or above. The screening process also verified that respondents were involved in mainframe decisions. Of the respondents, 44 percent were CIOs/CTOs; 20 percent were VP, SVP or EVP of IS/IT; and 36 percent were Director level.
