Conseco Partners With Compuware to Improve Cost and Quality for Sourcing Initiatives
Fortune 500 Insurance Company Benefits From Compuware’s Metrics-based Management SolutionDETROIT--October 10, 2007--Compuware Corporation (NASDAQ: CPWR) today announced that Conseco, a Fortune 500 insurance company, successfully deployed Compuware’s Metrics-based Management solution to ensure the best available quality for its sourced application development. Compuware’s Metrics-based Management solution helps ensure that companies that outsource application development and operations, whether outsourcing domestically or off-shoring globally, achieve desired return on investment through the measurement and management of targeted, key metrics. "Industry experts tell us that companies expect sourcing of business application development and maintenance to deliver savings between 25 and 40 percent," said Donna Ventimiglia, Compuware Senior Vice President, Products Sales. "However, businesses often fail to realize these savings because of inconsistency in performance, a lack of desired quality, difficulty in producing definitive requirements and growing cost overruns." Conseco faced the challenge of maintaining and adapting large, internally created mainframe applications, a task complicated further by the turnover and/or retirement of many of the original developers of these important business applications. Conseco was also shifting a portion of the company’s internal work to a Conseco office in India during the project. Conseco turned to Compuware to help manage these complexities. "Global collaboration can be tricky. We used Compuware’s Metrics-based Management solution to point our developers in India to the exact sections of the application code that needed work, taking the burden off of them right away," said Jeff Oliver, Project Manager at Conseco. "This helped us control the overall cost of the project and have a better handle on the ultimate quality of the application code." The Compuware solution pinpointed the exact portions of the application code that needed updating and made it possible to monitor untested code and cut down on rework. The Metrics-based solution also enabled Conseco to keep developers in India and Indiana on the same page in Conseco’s new, globalized IT environment. After implementing Compuware’s Metrics-based solution, Conseco tracked projects completed on time and reported an improvement in completion rates, as well as higher quality applications. In addition, Compuware’s solution provided Portfolio Metrics Reports that offered additional insight. "These reports helped me to know where to put talent and to address issues in terms of how I staff," explained Conseco Vice President Barry Staldine, who supervised the project. "These reports can then be used on an ongoing basis to track trends in the complexity of the code. That was huge from the technology management perspective, because it gave us a direction on how we manage these applications in terms of architecture." Beyond productivity and quality, Compuware’s Metrics-based solution assists customers in building and maintaining an inventory of assets. The Compuware solution helps automate the analysis needed to build inventories that can include documentation, jobs, transactions, test data, test scripts and production data. The two-pronged approach of understanding an inventory and trending for cost and quality is useful not only for companies that are managing global sourcing, but it can also be used when modernizing applications, much like Conseco’s project.
