Vantage Analyzer System Requirements

This site describes the minimum system requirements for each of the components that comprise Vantage Analyzer. Large applications or applications that support a large number of concurrent users require more than the minimum system requirements to function properly. There are unique requirements and supported environments for each of the following Vantage Analyzer components:

  • Vantage Analyzer J2EE Agent
  • Vantage Analyzer .NET Agent
  • Vantage Analyzer Nucleus Server
  • Vantage Analyzer Performance Console and Dashboard

To ensure top performance of your Vantage Analyzer solution, please read through the certified Application Servers, Operating Systems, Databases and JDK/.NET versions. If your environment is not yet certified, please contact Compuware Support to work through any issues you may encounter or to inquire about the product certification schedule.

In J2EE environments, other Application Servers that have not been certified but run in a supported JDK also may be monitored by Vantage Analyzer. The method detection, CPU usage and Memory Scope analysis features are all available. Vantage Analyzer may or may not detect specific J2EE components depending on the implementation of the Application Server by the vendor.

Vantage Analyzer J2EE Agent Requirements

Each Vantage Analyzer agent runs in the environment of the monitored application server. The J2EE agents run in the same Java Virtual Machine (JVM) as the monitored application server. The minimum system requirements to run a Vantage Analyzer Agent on a node are:

  • 50 MB of free memory on the system outside of the JVM. The Memory HotSpots collection option increases the minimum requirement to 70 MB.
  • 20 MB of free memory within the JVM. The Memory HotSpots collection option increases the minimum requirement to 100 MB. Note: The memory requirement at Agent startup increases with the total number of classes/methods being instrumented. The memory requirement of the Agent after startup increases with the stack depth of your application. As a general rule, monitoring large applications requires additional free memory both inside and outside the JVM.
  • 15 percent free CPU usage on the application server. This requirement increases depending on your Vantage Analyzer collection mode and enabled collection options. This requirement increases with the depth of your application's stack, a number of simultaneous threads and the length of transactions.
  • 5 MB of free disk space.

Vantage Analyzer .NET Agent Requirements

Each Vantage Analyzer agent runs in the environment of the monitored application server. The .NET agent runs on the same platform as the monitored application server. The minimum system requirements to run a Vantage Analyzer agent on a node are:

  • 100 MB of free memory in your IIS process. Note: The memory requirement at Agent startup increases with the total number of classes/methods being instrumented. The memory requirement of the Agent after startup increases with the stack depth of your application. As a general rule, monitoring large applications requires additional free memory.
  • 15 percent free CPU usage on the application server. This requirement increases depending on your Vantage Analyzer collection mode and enabled collection options. This requirement increases when your application has a deep stack, a large number of simultaneous threads, or long transactions.
  • 5 MB of free disk space.

Vantage Analyzer Nucleus Server Requirements

The Vantage Analyzer Nucleus Server runs on the Sun JDK 1.4, which is available as part of the installation package. Compuware recommends that the Nucleus Server run on its own system, as the Nucleus server consumes valuable CPU cycles to receive data from agents, store data into either a database or the file system, and distribute data to Vantage Analyzer Performance Consoles. Depending on the scope of your Vantage deployment, the Nucleus server can be combined with other Vantage components. The minimum system requirements of the Nucleus Server are:

  • 2+ GHz CPU or faster.
  • 512 MB of free memory. The required memory increases with the number of connected Agents (minimum 20 MB per additional Agent), the Vantage Analyzer collection modes and options enabled, and the user load on the monitored application.
  • 20 MB of free disk space. If you are not using a Nucleus Server database, increase this requirement by 20 MB per additional Agent.

Nucleus Server Supported Operating Systems

  • AIX 5.X POWERx
  • HP/Compaq Tru64 5.1B
  • HP-UX 11.0 PA-RISC 2.0
  • HP-UX 11i and 11i v2 PA-RISC 2.0
  • Redhat AS 2.1 x86
  • Redhat AS 3.0 x86
  • Solaris 7.x SPARC

  • Windows 2000 Server x86
  • Windows XP Professional x86
  • Windows 2003 Server x86
  • Windows 2003 Server x64

Nucleus Server Database Requirements

The Vantage Analyzer Nucleus Server can optionally use a database to store the data gathered by the agent(s). Compuware recommends that the Nucleus Server database be hosted on a database server separate from both the monitored application server and your main application databases. The Nucleus Server database can be added to an existing database schema with a unique database owner such as Vantage. The minimum system requirements for the

Nucleus Server database are:

  • Approximately 2 GB of free table space. The required table space increases with the number of connected Agents, the Vantage Analyzer collection modes and options enabled, and the user load on the monitored application. Plan for a minimum of 5 MB of table space consumed per hour per Agent. Note: The required table space is recommended minimum. Monitoring a large application will require additional table space.

Nucleus Server Supported Databases

  • MySQL 4.0
  • MySQL 4.1
  • Oracle 8.x
  • Oracle 9.x
  • Oracle 10.x
  • SQL Server 2000
  • SQL Server 2005

Vantage Analyzer Performance Console and Dashboard Requirements

The Performance Console connects to the Vantage Analyzer Nucleus Server to obtain and display performance metrics. Use the Performance Console to perform detailed analysis of your application’s performance. The Vantage Analyzer dashboard provides a user-configurable display of the health and performance of the monitored application(s). Both the Performance Console and dashboard run on the Sun 1.4 JDK, which is available as part of the installation package. The minimum system requirements for the Performance Console and dashboard are:

  • 2+ GHz CPU or faster.
  • 512 MB of free memory. The required memory increases with the number of connected Agents, the Vantage Analyzer collection modes and options enabled, and the user load on the monitored application.
  • 50 MB of free disk space.
