Extending Microsoft Visual Studio Tests with TestPartner

Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team System is a productive, integrated and extensible suite of life-cycle tools that expands the Visual Studio product line to allow greater communication and collaboration among software development teams. With Visual Studio 2005 Team System, organizations can ensure greater predictability and quality early and often throughout the development process.

Visual Studio Team Test includes features for test case management, manual testing and basic HTTP load testing. In addition, Microsoft teamed up with its Visual Studio Industry Partners to provide automated functional testing by integrating third-party tools such as Compuware TestPartner.

Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team System, part of Microsoft Visual Studio 2005, includes tools and technologies for all members of software development teams: project architects, developers, managers and testers. TestPartner is added to the Visual Studio tool list.

TestPartner scripts can be managed as standard Visual Studio test types and added to "Test Projects and Solutions."

The TestPartner repository of scripts (Asset Browser) is viewed within Visual Studio. Scripts can be executed from this window or moved into test collections called "Test Suites."

Test executions can include any combination of TestPartner, Microsoft unit, manual or load tests.

As Test Suites execute, status and results are displayed in real time.

After text execution, script results of the TestPartner execution log can be viewed within Visual Studio Team System. Multiple rerunning options are presented within the Test Results View.

TestPartner has been specially designed for testing complex applications based on Microsoft, web and Java-based technologies. Unique features of TestPartner allow both testers and developers to create repeatable tests through script capture and automatic wizards.

TestPartner's scripting environment and language is Microsoft's Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). You use a familiar interface that includes all the standard Microsoft features, such as Intellesense, and robust debugging, combined record-playback, check points, object mapping and other critical automation features.

Using TestPartner's ActiveData features, scripts can be quickly variablized for various forms of data-driven testing approaches. Multiple data sources can be utilized, and test data can be randomly generated or retrieved from relational databases using Compuware File-AID C/S.
