Alignment—a goal shared by chiropractor’s and CIO’s

Chiropractors make their living by adjusting their patient’s spine to put it into proper alignment.  And that’s exactly what CIOs are doing with their organizations—aligning.

In recent years it has become a priority for IT executives to take a more business-centric approach to management by aligning activities and resources closer to the strategic development of the business.

However, achieving business centric IT management includes balancing the supply and demand of resources, knowing what is going to deliver the most value to the business, showing that value and keeping in close communication with the ever-changing priorities of the business.  Not a small task- but also not impossible.  As a guide to some of these key initiatives, this issue of IT Management Newsletter explores the:

  • current state of supply and demand management in IT with results from an executive survey conducted by Computerworld
  • necessary components needed for an IT department to move toward a business-centric model with featured Executive Coach, Charles Emond
  • thoughts of an elite group of IT leaders during a roundtable discussion moderated by Ellen Kitzis, Vice President, Gartner, Inc.
  • importance of project management when modernizing the framework of mainframe portfolios.

Each resource provides insights to IT executives who are "adjusting" their departments based on the strategies of the overall business.  Doing this helps achieve  business centric IT management.

White Paper: "The Current State of Supply and Demand Management in IT"

Masthead Shadow Divider

This past April, Computerworld set out to understand the priorities of IT leaders in managing IT supply and demand within their organizations.  After surveying director-level and above IT professionals in organizations with 1,000 or more employees, the conclusions include:

  • Nine out of 10 respondents feel it is essential to agree with business counterparts on decision-making criteria to evaluate demand and obtain visibility and control into projects
  • Only 28 percent of respondents focus on balancing supply and demand
  • More than half the respondents appear to be managing supply and demand using an ad hoc approach.
