Compuware Ships New Development Solution for Analyzing Distributed Microsoft-Based Applications

Compuware DevPartner Studio Now Provides Insight and Information on Application Readiness, Reliability and Performance

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. -- April 8, 2002 -- Compuware Corporation (Nasdaq: CPWR) today announced that it has begun shipping new functionality for analyzing distributed Microsoft-based applications. Compuware DevPartner Studio now has a distributed analyzer that provides vital information on application readiness by locating problems and performance issues early in the development life cycle. This innovative functionality effectively traces the transactions of an application as it executes across multiple systems. Designed for developers and testers who are building multi-tiered web-based distributed applications, the distributed analyzer uses this insight to make recommendations for taking corrective action on errors, performance issues and design problems in distributed applications.

"DevPartner Studio’s distributed analyzer tool is to web-based applications what Compuware BoundsChecker is to Windows applications--a must have tool when you are trying to figure out what is going wrong," said beta tester Tim Ewald, author of Transactional COM+: Designing Scalable Applications and Effective COM. "It does a great job capturing and organizing all the disparate data about what is really happening in a multi-tiered system. The distributed analyzer will be a critical asset for anyone building complex web-based distributed applications."

Distributed analysis capabilities significantly reduce the time required for web-development and testing professionals to fully understand the critical events and transactions that are at the core of distributed, web-based applications. Development and testing teams use the distributed analyzer primarily during the system integration, debugging and testing phases of an application’s life cycle. One of the product’s unique features is its ability to collect and present results without requiring instrumentation, recompilation or source code. As a result, developers and testers will improve application reliability and performance without changing the way they develop today.

DevPartner Studio’s distributed analyzer supports Windows XP, 2000 and NT as well as COM, Internet Explorer, MTS/COM+, IIS, Active Server Pages, client- and server-side scripting, ISAPI and ADO. Additionally, the product’s architecture has been designed to easily drop-in support for new technologies such as Microsoft .NET and other emerging technologies.

"Development teams are under pressure to ensure that problems and performance issues in distributed web-based applications are identified long in advance of deployment," said Shari Zedeck, Director of Product Management for Compuware’s DevPartner family of products. "With distributed analysis capabilities, DevPartner Studio ultimately increases a team’s ability to identify and correct problems early in the development process, resulting in faster application deployment and increased application reliability and performance."

Development teams can use DevPartner Studio to analyze and pinpoint coding errors, performance bottlenecks and untested code. The distributed analysis functionality also complements other Compuware performance management solutions. When it is used in conjunction with Compuware’s Application Expert, development, testing and operations teams can analyze, understand and predict application performance for distributed applications--improving the quality and performance of the application as it reaches production readiness.

Distributed analysis is available now as part of Compuware DevPartner Studio 6.7. DevPartner Distributed Analyzer Remote Agent is priced separately and helps developers extend their application view beyond a single system. This gives developers the ability to understand problems affecting the reliability of multiple systems and technologies that make up a true distributed application.
