New Compuware Product to Simplify Java Application Development

OptimalJ Accelerates Time-to-Market of Reliable J2EE Applications and Maximizes Developer Effectiveness

SAN FRANCISCO -- June 4, 2001 -- At the JavaOne Developer Conference (Booth #1125) today Compuware Corporation (Nasdaq: CPWR - news) launched Compuware OptimalJ, a new class of advanced development environment. OptimalJ enables the rapid design, development and deployment of reliable, high-performance Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) business applications. The product generates complete, working applications directly from a visual model, using intelligent design patterns to implement best practices for design, infrastructure and coding. OptimalJ supports rapid application change and ongoing maintenance by keeping the code and model up-to-date with the sophisticated Active Synchronization feature.

``Although the J2EE platform has established enough momentum and critical mass to become a dominant platform for enterprise Java IT efforts, there is a need for highly productive Java tools that can be used by mainstream developers,'' said Evan Quinn, Vice President Application Strategies, Hurwitz Group. ``OptimalJ represents a new paradigm in Java development because it offers the productivity gains of traditional 4GLs and simplifies the development process for developers of all levels, which is necessary for broader Java usage.''

OptimalJ shields developers from the complexity of coding J2EE business applications by allowing them to interact with a visual model of the application and to automatically generate the code needed to implement a complete n-tier application. Using this visual paradigm, less experienced Java developers can quickly build or modify business applications. Advanced Java developers are freed from many of the repetitive coding tasks and can focus on architecture refinements and customization. This results in faster time-to-market of consistently high quality J2EE applications, during both development and maintenance phases, and maximizes developer effectiveness. OptimalJ supports multiple integrated development environments (IDEs) and application servers. The first release is integrated with the NetBeans open source tools platform and the Forte for Java IDE, which is Sun's commercial distribution of the NetBeans platform. OptimalJ automatically deploys to many of the leading J2EE production servers including iPlanet Application Server, IBM WebSphere and BEA WebLogic.

``Compuware has a wealth of experience in the enterprise development market,'' said Stans Kleijnen, Vice President, Forte Tools, Sun Microsystems. ``OptimalJ, with its strong pattern and visual modeling technology, reflects this heritage and promises to help improve the speed and success rate for developers of J2EE business applications. We're pleased that Compuware has selected the Forte for Java technology for use with OptimalJ.''

OptimalJ generates all the application code required for a deployed application based on implementation templates called patterns. These patterns contain knowledge and best practices for coding to the J2EE specification. Patterns enable developers to quickly generate full working applications using JSP, Session EJB and Entity EJB technologies with only limited knowledge of the J2EE specifications.

``There are many software companies active in the Java technology market that will claim to understand enterprise-level component-based development,'' said David Sprott, Principal Analyst of the CBDi Forum, a UK-based analyst firm. ``However, there are actually very few that have real experience of the demands that larger scale, complexity and integration place on skills management, productivity in build and maintenance and quality assurance. With OptimalJ, Compuware aims to address the needs of development managers in the real world.''

OptimalJ also features a business rules editor for application customization that allows developers to add business rules at all levels of the application. By separating out business rules as easily identifiable elements in this way, many business requirement changes can be quickly and easily implemented. Business rule data and code are generated with the application code and database scripts are quickly and easily deployed with the OptimalJ integrated deployment environment. This feature allows the full application to be quickly deployed in local test servers and multi-tier production environments resulting in fewer errors and faster deployment. OptimalJ is scheduled for commercial availability in the third calendar quarter of 2001. Pricing details will be available at that time.
