Microsoft took its Visual Studio development environment—and partnership with Compuware—one step further with the release of Visual Studio .NET, the only development environment built from the ground up for XML Web services. XML Web services combine the best aspects of component-based development and the web, and are the cornerstone of the Microsoft .NET programming model. With Visual Studio .NET, developers can assemble applications from new and existing code, regardless of platform, programming language or object model. Converting to Visual Studio .NET, meant that, for the first time, developers would be able to access third-party debugging tools integrated within the integrated development environment (IDE).

Microsoft hand-picked Compuware, a founding member of the Visual Studio .NET Integration Program, to create tools for checking the reliability, performance and scalability of applications developed with Visual Studio .NET. The integration of Compuware-built tools into the Visual Studio .NET development environment allows developers to easily deploy applications into existing environments, saving costs and increasing revenue opportunities. 

Microsoft’s support of Compuware offers added advantages. Compuware representatives speak regularly at Microsoft Visual Basic and C++ user groups, illustrating the benefits of Visual Studio .NET and how Compuware tools support development. Relating the combined benefits of Microsoft and Compuware tools to development audiences around the world, the two companies strengthen their message promoting the Windows platform.
